‘Dear Evan Hansen’ disappoints as ‘Shang-Chi’ becomes biggest movie of 2021
Estimates for the movie Universal Pictures, in which Ben Platt is reprising his role as the main character, were all over the place. Some analysts believed the film would make around $ 10 million while others projected closer to what the film ultimately made.
However, $ 7.5 million is a disappointment for a Tony Award-winning musical based film with a strong fan base, a US nationwide tour and a London production.
There are several reasons why “Evan Hansen” failed to generate more ticket sales. For starters, the movie industry is still recovering from the ongoing pandemic.
That said, the film was enjoyed by those who went to see it, getting an “A-” CinemaScore.
From its opening weekend, “Evan Hansen” seems to be heading towards the latter category.
Elsewhere at the box office, Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” continues to be successful.
The action flick clinched the top spot for the fourth straight weekend at the North American box office with a take of $ 13.3 million. The film, which grossed $ 363.4 million worldwide and $ 196.5 million nationally, is the highest grossing domestic film of 2021 to date.
However, the Marvel movie will have some competition in the coming weeks.
