How teenage girls started eating a tampon while eating a TikTok hoax
No, people aren’t eating tampons or drinking menstrual blood because of an internet challenge. What is happening, however, is that the teenage girls have launched an elaborate TikTok hoax that they eat their tampons to “get the blood they’ve lost.”
On TikTok, stories of girls eating their tampons began to circulate after TikToker @ caro.trash posted a video apparently about how guys can be clueless about periods, as they don’t even know girls “eat their tampon after they’re done with it for enjoying reabsorbing all the blood they come in to lose”.
Since the @ caro.trash video posted in June, rumors of girls eating tampons have been circulating online, mostly on TikTok, and mostly from girls who knew it was a joke.
While it’s obvious to anyone who has had their period that it’s not normal to eat tampons or menstrual blood, some people seem to have been fooled by this prank. A number of TikTok memes describe the shocked, confused, and often rightly skeptical reactions of boys when told that eating tampons is a regular, healthy habit for much of the population.
Some videos go so far as to use fake blood so that people actually appear to be consuming tampons, pads, menstrual cups, etc.
There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for this hoax other than to troll boys and men for their ignorance of menstruation and women’s bodies. The TikTok tampon consumption hoax combines the value of shock, absurdity, and the difficulty of discerning whether or not someone on the internet is facetious or not in a perfect storm of jokes, memes, and very confused boys.
It is possible that this hoax could help people feel more comfortable talking about periods, but maybe only as part of a joke …
