Pair of popular Edina vloggers appear in new clip
EDINA, Minnesota (FOX 9) – Whether swimming, traveling, or even getting married, Shane and Hannah Burcaw share their day to day as an inter-capacity couple on their YouTube channel, Squirmy and Grubs, which has nearly 900,000 subscribers.
Now they hope to help others in the disability community feel seen.
“We are trying to improve the way society understands disability,” said Shane Burcaw.
The couple are featured in a new music video for a song called “spaces” by musician James Ian, who suffers from the same rare condition, spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, as Shane, which severely weakens their muscles.
The Burcaws believe the song is the first created by and for the disability community.
“Disability is not very well represented in any form of media. When you turn on the television, it is very rare to see a disabled person. When you listen to the radio, it is very rare to hear a disabled person,” said Shane said.
Not only did clips from their wedding appear in the video, along with footage from other members of the SMA community, the Burcaws also helped brainstorm and write the song and everything in the video was directed and performed by people. with disabilities.
“There is so much stigma and misunderstanding around disability. We think this song will change and improve a lot of perceptions of disability. Show people that we are living amazing lives and careers here and that nothing is holding us back.” , Shane said.
The Burcaws hope the catchy tune will help listeners absorb the deeper message and inspire other people with disabilities to make their mark.
“I hope that one thing this song will do is show young people with disabilities that they can do whatever they put their hearts and minds into,” Shane said.
