Spanish authorities say Shakira failed to pay tax on income she earned between 2012 and 2014. The Grammy winner faces six counts, including using a corporation offshore to hide his income.
Spain considers anyone who has lived in the country for more than six months as a resident.
Shakira, who bought a house in Barcelona in 2012, insists she hasn’t lived in Spain long enough to meet the country’s tax requirements, despite declaring Spain as her main residence in for tax purposes in 2015. The singer also insists that she paid tax money she owes and additional interest.
As her case now heads to trial, prosecutors have called for her to be sentenced to eight years and two months in prison – in addition to a hefty 23 million euro fine – if found guilty. guilty.
