Your Song – Elton John’s songs and styles on display in Brisbane
Elton John’s iconic songbook is celebrated and embraced in the dazzling ‘Your Song’, presented by The Little Red Company at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Elton’s extensive career is undeniably unforgettable and groundbreaking. In ‘Your Song‘ stories of heartache and hope, pain and passion, first loves and last moments are woven throughout this timeless music.
The megastar’s greatest hits will be reimagined – there’s ‘Candle In The Wind’, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’, ‘I’m Still Standing’, ‘Benny And The Jets’, ‘Tiny Dancer’ and more.
Of course, Elton’s music is his most common identifier – but he’s also synonymous with fabulous, eye-catching fashion! So it makes sense that special attention is paid to what the performers (Andy Cook, Marcus Corowa, Luke Kennedy and Irena Lysiuk) wear at night.
Here we speak to “Your Song” costume designer Laura Churchill to learn more about the show and the fashion side of things.
Tell us a bit about ‘Your Song’, first of all.
“Your Song” celebrates the music of Elton John (whom I’m a big fan of) and The Little Red Company has created such a beautiful, fun, moving and hilarious tribute to his music. People shared their real stories about their memories of Elton John and how his music impacted their lives and it brings an extra layer of meaning to the songs. The cast is amazing.
Clearly, there’s plenty of inspiration to be drawn from, with Elton at the center. Where did you start with costumes? !
I took the lead from the team in not wanting to recreate and take a literal interpretation of Elton John’s wardrobe. The costumes for “Your Song” match the cast’s sense of style and hint at some of Elton’s most iconic looks without being too “costume-like.” They look cool.
What do you think is your favorite Elton look?
I love Irena in her orange jumpsuit which we inspired by the devil costume from the movie “Rocketman”. The very talented Zoe Griffiths made feather shoulder pads for everyone’s final looks and Irena put it all together. I also made pink heart shaped glasses with crystals for this moment and it’s a great look for her!
Why do you think Elton’s fashion is so iconic?
I think Elton is a pioneer for his unique style as much as for his unique music. True originality doesn’t come around very often and that’s why it’s so iconic and so special.
What was the main thing you wanted to convey/communicate through the costumes for this show?
The show that Naomi and Adam designed is so heartfelt and deep and I think it would have taken that depth away if the costumes had been over the top and show stealing. Each of the actors plays themselves as they perform and share the stories of other real people, and pay such funny, touching and moving tributes to the work of Elton John. The costumes simply helped the audience to dive deeper into this world and added color, beauty and humor to the overall experience.
What is your favorite thing about working on costumes for a given show?
Work with the Little Red team! I can’t even tell you how amazing it is to be part of this energy and among such talented people.
Describe the costumes for ‘Your Song’ in three words.
Red makes Elton.
‘Your Song’ plays at the Queensland Performing Arts Center from September 30 to October 1.
